Solution: Military Housing

September 24th, 2009
by Jack

My blog about military housing being substandard has pushed me to write a blog about something I was planning on doing anyway, just sooner than I expected.

To every problem lies a solution, if your willing to try.  In concerns to military housing, their is definitely an easy solution.  The United States Military is the only Federal Organization that forces employees to live inside government housing.  Minus, married couples and certain ranks of course.  If your single or below Staff Sergeant you have absolutely no recourse but what the military deems for you.

My solution is simple, pay everyone housing allowance and give everyone the choice to live or not to live in base housing.  It’s already a solution for some of those in the military, and it should apply to everyone.  If your married, by law the military has to give you, your own house to live in with your family, or you receive a housing allowance and can live off base.  Officers and senior NCOs also have this privilege.   However, single lower enlisted (which make up the majority) are forced to live in barracks.

By allowing lower enlisted the right of off base housing it opens up a free market solution to many problems.

1. If Soldiers aren’t living in barracks, then, we don’t have to build new barracks.  Saves the government loads of money in huge projects.

2. If Soldiers aren’t living in barracks, then, their is no issue of barracks being substandard or dangerous.

3. Right now, the US Government is a Slumlord.  The military isn’t a big enough voter base for radical change to take place; the status-quo will continue.

4. If Soldiers are living in their own houses or rentals then the government can get back to doing what they are supposed to be doing, enforcing health standards.  When it’s the government that’s breaking the standard it just leads to cover-up.

5. Hey remember that housing market crisis thing… Well if you put about 1 million troops into the housing market; It can only be a good thing, right?

Now, I don’t believe that the on base housing should be completely removed.  What should happen is everyone should be paid basic housing allowance and if someone chooses to live on base, then they should have to pay a rent fee just like the rest of us.  This should stimulate better on base housing; if the government wants some of it’s money back then they have to get people interested in living on base.

Government Health Care: Yea We Got That!

September 22nd, 2009
by Jack

Well we all know about Medicare, but most people probably have never heard of Tricare.  Tricare is the health care provider for our nation’s military.  It’s free for active duty Soldiers and their families.  While it covers retirees, it’s not free and until recently it wasn’t available to reservists.  Why did the military open up Tricare to reservists?  You would think it’s because the deployment rate of the reserves, but that’s not it.  It turns out it was cheaper for the military to fund a program for reservists where they pay for coverage then when they come on active duty for their deployment, to fix all their problems.

I’ve been activated for deployment twice and I know all about this.  An entire unit shows up to this thing called SRP, (an SRP is basically a process of making sure all your paperwork, medical issues and equipment is ready for deployment).  The biggest deal with these things are the medical review.  When my unit was deployed, half of the people inside the unit had teeth pulled.  That’s right!  Teeth pulled!  It’s cheaper for the government to just pull your teeth out than fix them.

Well about two or three years ago, the military opened up Tricare to reservists, and about one year ago they opened up a dental plan.  The problem was they were losing to many people through the SRP process (if your too broken to deploy, they won’t send you) and it was costing the government a lot of money to fix people’s issues.

If you think government run health care is great.  Let me tell you about my experience.

Sure, while your on active duty it’s totally free!  You just show up and they take care of your problems.

However, it’s been my experience that they make it very unpleasant to go.  First off, ever wake up in the morning and feel like total crap?  Of course everyone does.  That’s when you call up work and call in dead.  Sometimes the best remedy is just rest.  Why go to a doctor if you know you just need some good old Zs?

Not in the military!  If you wake up and you just need some rest.  SICK CALL!  See the military (and government for that matter) has a process for everything.  If your sick, go to sick call.  Their view on it is; your not a doctor, so you can’t make a judgment like that on your own.  Want to go to sick call?  The night before you have to see your supervisor and fill out a sick call form.  You have to show up for the morning formation;  Usually around 4:30 or 5am (forget about that recommended sleep I was talking about earlier).  Then, you can be taken to the hospital or local clinic.  Since sick call is at a specific time, the waiting line is incredibly long.  I mean who thought sending everyone to the hospital at the same time was a brilliant idea?  So after you’ve waited around for a couple hours you finally get to see a medic.

Now be careful; I love medics, but those guys will try and convince you that you need an IV!  You go in for a headache and their like, ‘what you need is some H20 in your veins!’  Why do they want to stick you?  Well they need to do so many ’sticks’ a year to stay certified.  So they are always pushing for IVs.  My recommendation is if you came in with a hangover… take the IV, it’s WONDERFUL!

Now sick call is for minor things, if your issue turns out to be something bigger.  They will then schedule you to see a specialist.

Another problem is sometimes your chain of command will give you a hard time about seeing a doctor.  Just like a normal business, nobody likes to lose their employee for a day or two.

I’ve also heard people complain that health care insurance companies force people to go to only doctors inside of their plan.  That you have to call ahead to, ‘OK’ seeing a doctor.  Guess what!  Tricare does the same thing.  In my opinion they are even worse.  I had to get a physical and was told my closest choice was an hour and a half away.  Recently for a flight physical I had to get my eyes checked.  Even though their are plenty of doctors that do Eye Refractions, if I wanted the government to pay for it I had to go to the closest government medical facility.  It just so happens that it was about three hours away.  Efficiency, nope.

I’ve heard congress talking about preexisting conditions a lot recently.  Which kind of makes me laugh because of the enlistment process.  Everyone knows recruiters will tell you anything to get you into the military.  However, did you know that their are people whose job revolves around making sure you can’t make it into the military?  When potential recruits make the decision to join the military they take them to a place called MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station).  Now it’s the recruiters job to make sure you get into the military, and it’s MEPS job to make sure you don’t.  WAH!?  Yes!  The medical department at MEPS is tasked with weeding out people who are trying to enter with preexisting conditions.  Most people think they are just trying to see if you meet the standard of what is expected of a service member.  It’s just not true.  You see many people try to enter the military to get free health care.  They find out something is wrong with them that will costs MEGABUCKS, and they figure my only choice is the military.  Well, the truth is the government doesn’t want to fix broken people.  They, just like a corporation have to worry about costs.  Nobody wants to take on someone who already has problems.  So, if your planning on joining let me tell you, ‘those doctors at MEPS aren’t your friend!’

Don’t get me wrong.  It’s nice having free health care while on active duty.  Except, it’s not really free.  My taxes and your taxes are paying for it.  The military is full of great doctors who really care about helping troops.  My opinion is that health care is too big of an issue to pass it through quickly and it’s just sounds too complicated as some of the plans are 1,000 pages long.  It sounds like a lot of loop holes to me.

Free Market Military supports the effort to change the law so that health care can be bought across state lines.  If the president wants competition, start with allowing companies to go to any state!  That’s a no brain`er.  I think they should pass a bill now for tort reform and health care across state lines.  Once that’s done, hey, let’s see if we still even need the public plan.  Maybe, it will fix itself… with the FREE MARKET!

In my heart I’d really like to support single-payer solution.  Our taxes pay for police, fire departments, mail; why not my doctor?  If I thought it would work, I would support it.  Frankly, I think the only thing the government would do is mess it up.  I’ve always thought of the government as this person who is suppose to protect you and enforce standards.  But, if the government becomes your provider… who’s going to protect you from the government?

Fort Meade: Soldiers Living in Condemned Buildings

September 21st, 2009
by Jack

Big_DINFOS_FMM

I was on a trip to Washington, DC recently and I visited several of my friends that are attending the Defense Information School (DINFOS) on Fort Meade.  I stayed the night inside of the Army enlisted barracks the night before I went to Washington.  I woke up feeling sick with a sore throat after one night stay.  Why is this you ask, or why should you even care?

Well it just so happens that the Army barracks (and maybe the Marine and Navy Barracks) are infested with black mold and it just so happens the government has known for two years now.

I did some further investigation.  What I found was a bit appalling.

Quick Information:  DINFOS is a Joint DOD School it has Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen and Coasties.  Each service has their own barracks.  However, the Army makes up the majority of DINFOS students.

Black Mold symptoms from Wikipedia

Depending on the length of exposure and volume of spores inhaled or ingested, symptoms can manifest as chronic fatigue or headaches, fever, irritation to the eyes, mucous membranes of the mouth, nose and throat, sneezing, rashes, and chronic coughing. In severe cases of exposure or cases exacerbated by allergic reaction, symptoms can be extreme including nausea, vomiting, uncontrollable bowel movements, and bleeding in the lungs and nose.

It turns out that not long ago a new set of barracks that meets the Army living conditions standard were built.  The new barracks are really nice and designed in an apartment complex style with two rooms and a kitchen to every apartment.  The new complex was built because the old housing doesn’t meet new housing standards.  The Army has the oldest of the barracks so the new barracks were supposed to house enlisted Soldiers.  It makes sense, who ever has the oldest barracks gets the newest first.

Well, that’s not how it happened.  About 2 years ago they found black mold in the barracks.  So what did they do?  They put all of the Air Force enlisted in the new barracks. Just so happens the old Air Force building was newer than the old Army building.  So, put the Army guys in the Air Force building, right!? Nope! They condemned the old Air Force barracks, boarded up all the entrances and built a huge fence around the complex.   Hmmmm….

Doesn’t make a lot of sense till I spoke with someone that works for the commander’s staff.

The commander of the base figured that it would be easier to get more funds from congress for building more living complexes if the Air Force took the new building and then said, “We need more money for housing, the Army is living in substandard housing, and it’s infested with black mold.”  It would have been harder to get money had the Army lived in the new building and the other services lived in their complexes that aren’t as degraded.

Good intentions?  For the Soldiers at DINFOS, the good intentions of getting better barracks are making them sick and could also be causing them to lose their jobs.

How could mold cost someone their job?  DINFOS is for intelligent warriors.  DINFOS teaches courses in; Journalism, Broadcasting, Multimedia and Intelligence.  While all of those jobs require a clear mind, the broadcasting career relies heavily on the ability to speak.  Broadcasting for the military is TV Production and Radio.  Can you think of any radio or TV personality that’s going to take a chance of ruining their money making voice?

So that sore throat from the black mold could cause you to fail in announcing skills.  In the miltiary, failing any subject will either force you into a different career field or expel you from the military.  Several people I talked to said they were getting sick all the time and had to go to the hospital occasionally.

Two years ago when they found the black mold the military took two actions in concern to the infestation.  The first thing they did was remove the tiles.  The tiles were so full of black mold that the weight bowed them in the middle.  The second thing they did was paint over the mold.  I’m not an expert, but I don’t think painting over the mold is enough.

Two months ago, after a meeting between enlisted Soldiers and the Inspector General about computer access and the living conditions in the barracks; the old computer room was reopened.  It just so happened that when the cadre opened the room they found the ceiling tiles sunken from mold infestation.  It’s not clear if they just missed this room previously or if they cleaned it and then closed the room off allowing the mold to grow unchecked by routine cleaning.

Now here is some nasty cover up by the cadre.  The Army cadre were told that the buildings were going to be inspected by the health inspector.  So instead of allowing the truth to come out about the barracks.  They mustered the prior service and the all the fresh out-of-basic Soldiers to replace all of the tiles, and then clean and scrub the two Army barracks with bleach; the night before the inspector was to arrive.

Now you have to ask yourself; Should the government be allowed to dictate health care, when it can’t even take care of it’s own?  Just think of Walter Reed and rats running around.

Insult to Injury: The Airmen just don’t get the new barracks, they also get more money because the new barracks don’t meet Air Force standards.  Whoops!  Are the Army standards really that low they you have to pay Airmen to live in brand new barracks.

More Insult to Injury: The Army only pays more money for housing if your in a combat or danger zone.  Apparently, mold and substandard housing isn’t a danger.

Doubling Over in Insult to Injury: Well, it turns out that the new barracks, that the Air Force dudes are staying in; is full.  So instead of putting them in with the Army or other service.  They gave them their own hotels.  WAH!  I guess Uncle Sam loves my Air Force brother more than me, why not put some Army Dudes in the hotels and get them out of those condemn buildings?

Makes sense.  When I was stationed at Guantanamo Bay a new Air Force arrival showed up at our barracks and immedeatly complained.  The guy was like, “This doesn’t meet Air Force standards.”  Even though there was about 40 other Air Force enlisted staying in the same barracks.  They gave him his own hotel room on base.

Additional Problems I found: This is the other stuff I noticed around the barracks.  The air conditioning doesn’t work in all of the rooms (which they won’t fix because they want to condemn the building).  Even the rooms the air conditioning works in, the air conditioning fails to remove moisture from the air.  It’s just cold wet air.  Which causes the mold and also causes the carpets to peel.  You know those carpets that are built in little squares and are held down by glue, well all of the floors  have missing or destroyed carpet because the moisture causes the carpet to rise and peel.  Since the air isn’t dry, everything is wet.  Electronics start acting funny, clothes are always moldy, the carpets and wooden closets are always wet.

This was also not clear, either the barracks have already been condemned, but remain open.  Or, they are to be condemn once they get people out.

John Stossel Moves to Fox News… good or bad?

September 17th, 2009
by Jack

Article Here.

For Fox News and John Stossel this is going to be a career changer.  Especially for John, I mean is anyone watching anybody but Fox these days?

Most of my news comes from either Fox or the Internet.  Once in awhile I like to flip to MSNBC and CNN too see how they are reporting on the same story.  Sometimes they aren’t even covering it.  Most of the time they are talking about it and it just seems like Fox has about 200% more information on the story.

The best example of this; does anyone remember that story of the teenage highschool girls who made a pact to all get pregnant.  Well I started off watching it on CNN I believe (could have been MSNBC), and they were interviewing the teenagers.  The whole feel of the interview was basically, ‘Wow, look how cute this story is.  Aren’t these kids so mature and grown up to make cute decisions like these.  Wowwie!  How did you guys feel all about this?’

The story CNN was portraying was all positive; which as time went by I started thinking.  WTF?  These are a bunch of teenage girls who can’t vote, can’t smoke, can’t drink, and can’t get into a contract with anyone.  But, they should all decide to get preggers?  That’s not cute and smart, that’s naive and stupid!

So I switched to Fox News and they were talking about the same story.  I ended up getting a lot more information about the story that even though CNN had a live interview didn’t get to the bottom of the whole thing.

Fox was discussing how one or several of the girls had older men, twenty-something impregnate them.  Now most of the girls did it with their underage boyfriends, but CNN wasn’t even talking about this; which happens to then be a CRIME!

Now the thing I like about FOX is they are Fair and Balanced.  So they brought up the fact that these adult men should have been responsible enough to known they were committing a crime.  Then, added in an opposing view that maybe the adult guys shouldn’t be prosecuted because the girls who intended to get pregnant were almost predators in this situation.

Why bring this up?  Well, it’s becoming quite clear that nobody watches any of the other networks anymore.  They put out the statistics on how many people are watching each network, and I’d like to think that the actual numbers are even lower.  I have to consider that military offices and government buildings have TVs on displaying the news all day.  Somehow they are always on CNN or MSNBC.  So if they are basing these numbers on how many people are actively getting signal from those stations, considering how many TVs the government owns their are very very few actual citizens watching ABC, MSNBC, and CNN.

Why don’t they have FOX on you might ask?  I asked the same thing to my First Sergeant and at the time his response was, “Their is no point in watching those who support us, you gotta watch your enemies!”

The problem that arises from FOX becoming the only news channel watched on TV is apparent from anyone who believes in the free market.  Nobody watches CNN or MSNBC, then all of their advertisers pull out and they go bankrupt.  No matter how much I like FOX, I don’t want them to have a monopoly.

Monopolies are very evil, especially in the world of news.  *Cough Venezuela cough*

So while John Stossel improves FOX NEWS, I hope it also smacks MSNBC, CNN and ABC in the face and say, ‘Hey you better change your ways or you’ll be like GM, God forbid!’

More Evidence That Petraeus Plans To Run For President. BONUS: I Get To Make Fun Of The Air Force.

September 16th, 2009
by Jack

First off, here is the Article.

I think I’ll start this post with a similar joke that the joke Petreaus told was probably based on.  It’s a pretty well-known joke in the military world.

The classic joke:

So I saw this poster the other day.  It was really great!  It depicts the 4 different services on it, the first one is a Soldier out at a checkpoint in the middle of the jungle and it’s raining and the bubble above his head says, ‘This Sucks!’  The next picture shows a Marine in the middle of the jungle with a 80 pound pack on and it’s raining and he’s covered in mud and he says, ‘This sucks, but I love it!’  Man, those Marines are crazy.  Then, there’s a picture of this Sailor and he’s out in the middle of the ocean and the waves are crashing over-top of his ship and washing over him and he says, ‘This SUCKS!’  The last picture shows this Air Force Officer sitting on his couch in his office looking at his TV.  He’s clicking the remote and he says, ‘The CABLE IS OUT! THIS SUCKS!’

Why is this evidence that Petraeus plans on running for president?  It’s simple, no self-respecting Soldier would ever apologize for telling this joke.  Only a politician who is very worried about offending a large section of potential voters would apologize for this kind of joke.

The Marines’ sense of toughness permeates the Corps’ lore as well as its reality.

To recall an illustrative story, a soldier is trudging through the muck in the midst of a downpour with a 60-pound rucksack on his back. “This is tough,” he thinks to himself.

Just ahead of him trudges an Army Ranger with an 80-pound pack on his back: “This is really tough,” he thinks.

And ahead of him is a Marine with a 90-pound pack on. And he thinks to himself, “I love how tough this is!” Then, of course, 30,000 feet above them, an Air Force pilot flips aside his ponytail — I’m sorry, I don’t know how that got in there, they haven’t had ponytails in a year or two — and looks down at them through his cockpit as he flies over. “Boy,” he radios his wingman, “It must be tough down there.”

You have to understand; Soldiers and Marines are Warriors.  We follow a Warrior creed, and we fight and kill the enemy under any condition.  However, Airmen are not warriors.  They are Technicians.  The only people in the Air Force that actually train to fight are Pilots and their Special Forces guys.  They can take their physical training test on a stationary bicycle for goodness sake!  The fact of the matter is that most of the time when you joke around with Air Force people about this, they are usually pretty proud of it.  Why are they proud?  The have insanely higher living conditions standards, and when they have to live in Army or Marine housing, they get paid extra!  Air Force Personnel are treated like civilians (business-professionals).  They have better housing, food, bases, everything!  They really don’t have a reason to feel bad.

So if you have really thin skin and get bent out of shape because of a joke that made you feel like your not working or enduring as hard as the rest of us.  Then, frankly, you shouldn’t have joined the Air Force.  That’s what I would have said.  But!  I’m not running for an elected position.  Not yet… at least.

Defense Tech: Revealed: The Army’s New Camo – Looks like the Army is full of idiots… Again…

Seriously!?  Are the Officers who are in charge of this, even trying anymore?  You got to be kidding me.  I love the wear of the ACU, but it’s ugly and it’s not very effective camouflage.  This is a step in the wrong direction.  It looks to me like some officer was like, “Hey take what he have now and throw in some brown, yea… yea… that sounds like a good idea… I’m off to get some coffee.”

If you were a smart leader you would lead from example.  It’s called the Marine digital camouflage.  The Marine digital uniforms are excellent camouflage and they look great.  For the army use of course you just got to take out those little marine symbols they got on them. Geez…

Stars and Stripes: Jared Monti’s soldiers watched him give his life, and it changed theirs

It hurts to read this article, it’s a really powerful story.  Beyond being a story of tragedy and heroics, it also stands out to me that this might be a case of lowest bidder contracts.  The winch line broke?  Two people at one time being pulled up by a wench has to weight no more than 500 pounds.  The little winch on my ATV can hold against  1,500 pounds.  Winch’s on trucks have to be around 5,000 pounds.  How could a wench on a HELICOPTER just snap?

To me the biggest tragedy is the medic never realizing that the winch could just snap and kill the both of them.  At least the infantrymen know they are going into battle and the inherent dangers.  A winch just snapping from a meager 500 pounds is jaw dropping.

Military Procurement is for Losers

September 14th, 2009
by Jack

Our current procurement process comes from an antiquated time.  A time when the prospect of showcasing our entire arsenal for open viewing by our enemies was still considered a bad idea.  Now exists a world where information is easily attained and is swarming across the internet.  It’s hard to imagine, say a time period like the 1920s; shows like Future Weapons and magazines like Janes existing (if they could exist that is, TV wasn’t invented until the 1980s, duh!).  We didn’t tell anyone what we had and we didn’t want them to know.  We didn’t even use the M2 .50 Cal machine gun during WW1 for fear the Germans would steal the design (more on the 50 Cal later, that’s a whole other blog).

Although the military denies it, our current system of procurement is hardly free market, effected heavily by politics and/or based on the lowest bidder.  Frankly, every single thing about the past sentence makes me sick to my stomach.  As a Soldier it makes me sick to think, ‘things I’m depending upon to save my life are decided upon by who bid the lowest price.’  It really effects my faith in everything from the boots I wear to the parts that keep those things my mother calls, ‘whirlie-birds‘ (AKA Helicopters, or in Arnold’s case, THE CHOPPER) from falling out of the sky like a rock, and then breaking into a million pieces like a ceramic vase being hit by a train.

The reason the B-52 lasted so long is purely political.  The B-52 which entered service in the 1950s has been in every major conflict up to and including the Iraq invasion.  Every time the airframe was sought to be replaced it found stiff opposition from every senator and congressmen wanting to keep his job.  The advantage of politics is that parts of the B-52 are not made in one single factory, but over several across the United States.  One state can be ignored, but when jobs from many states are on the line, heads of congressmen are on the chopping block.

I plan to write a lot on procurement but today it will just be my stance on a free market solution to corruption, old equipment and lowest bidder purchases.

The first week of basic training is when a Soldier’s clothing is issued.  The government has complexes full of boots, fatigues, berets (Gen. Shinseki your a jerk!), gloves, etc.  It’s your standard issue kind of stuff, standard being the important word in this sentence.  Military contracts wreak of standard (sometimes sub-standard) equipment, because they are based on lowest bidder and not on competition.  So while their are an array of different kinds of boots, while your in the issuing line the only thing they care about is that they gave you the right size and that you keep on moving.

Since I brought up Boots, they make for a good analogy.  Human beings are all different, we come in different sizes, shapes.  We have different likes and dislikes.  A shirt on one person might feel too tight while on another it’s too loose.  Human beings are different, so if were so different why doesn’t the military allot soldiers the respect to give them the personal preference of a basic thing like clothing?

If you think that maybe this is an issue of a stagnant market, then you haven’t been to Ranger Joes, US Cavalry, Special Forces, Brigade Quartermaster.  The standard issue stuff is so bad that many times Soldiers will go out and purchase their own equipment which is of a higher standard and/or more comfortable than what they were given.  This market is on such a rise that I’m seeing a Brigade Quartermaster store popping up on almost every base.

So what’s my point?  What’s a solution?

Here are the problems with military procurement, it usually takes forever to replace something that has become standard issue (as an example the M2 50 cal has been in Army Service for over 90 years, the M16A2 for 30 years, the equipment I used in basic training was made during the Vietnam War).  Standard issue doesn’t take into account personal preference, or wear/handling issues.  Also, military procurement is always notoriously over deadline and over budget (The M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle (over 20 years of R&D), ARH-70 (so over budget and deadline it got canceled).

Here is a 2 tiered solution.

Clothing and Tactical Gear:

Stop issuing equipment!  When a Soldier joins the military, they should receive an allotment of money to purchase their own equipment.  Every couple of years the Soldier should receive additional money to replace existing equipment.  If equipment is broken while in combat, the government will give Soldier money to cover the cost to replace equipment.

1. Ensures Soldier has the newest technology the free market can provide.

2. Saves the government from paying for R&D.

3. Saves the government from having to pay government prices which are usually 2 times the commercial value.  If you didn’t know, for example a computer that costs you and me about 500 dollars would cost the government, say, 1,200 dollars.  Having Soldiers pay commercial prices keeps costs low.

4. Since the equipment is personally owned, it keeps future soldiers from having to deal with hand-me-downs that are broken or defective from the previous owner.

5. Stimulates competition in the market, thus, creating better equipment.

6. Saves the government from having to deal with surplus and also having to store large amounts of equipment.

7. Allows Soldier to do some research and find the best equipment.

8. What other things can you think of, leave me comments?

Weapon Systems:

The current procurement of weapon systems is a joke.  Right now if the military wanted a new rifle it would set a standard and put out a contract for bids.  Once the deadline has been met then a group of officers make a decision on who wins the contract.  In theory, the different companies are competing for the best product, but in reality as long as they meet the standard it really doesn’t matter, as long as the price is good and the officers like your company.  The Army decided they wanted to replace the M16 with the XM8, however, politics happened.  They decided to buy more M4s.  Look at these statistics from Army Times and tell me if you can still say the US Military uses the best equipment on the Earth.

I’m not saying the M4 is a bad weapon, but, compared to newer weapons that use a piston system instead of an open gas system, rifles like the XM8 the HK 416 are far superior.  In the military, far superior saves lives.

How it should run is like DARPA (check out some of the amazing things DARPA has done for the military, Unmanned Race, Winner of Urban Challenge, Urban Challenge Footage, BIGDOG the Robot.

How future contracts should work is by a competition.  The Military should set a minimum standard of what they want in a weapon or device and come up with a way to have it compete.  The specifics on what is being graded should be made available to the manufacturers.   For example, if the Army wants a new rifle they ask for a rifle that has a rail for accessories, it must not malfunction more than 100 times with 6,000 rounds and must be accurate up to 300 meters.  Then, any company that wants to compete has to endure it’s own R&D costs.   When it comes to the competition the rifles are graded based on accuracy, efficiency (how many times it malfunctions),  weight, ergonomics, ease of use, ect.  Who ever has the most points wins.  It’s simple, fair, and saves the government money.  It also stops corruption.  No longer will one company be picked over another because a congressman needs more business for his district.

Iraq – Son, It’s Not Selling out, It’s Buying In!

September 12th, 2009
by Jack

The people who are now the Sons of Iraq used to be our enemy, when they turned to our side  they did an amazing job at protecting Iraq from their previous employer.  The problem with the Sons of Iraq before they switched to our side is they were fighting for something they didn’t necessarily believe in.  All the reports from Army journalists I’ve gotten is that the Sons of Iraq really care about making their country better.  They are all young men who are embracing the idea that Iraq can actually be a nice place for them to raise a family.  Go figure, Democracy Rocks!

Their have been several reports lately that soldiers in the employ of the Taliban and al-qaeda are under the same pretenses.  They aren’t true believers, they are just poor men looking for work.  Jobs and money mean a lot to everyone, in the free world and the not-so-free world.  Is it time for Afghanistan to face some reconciliation with those who have been openly fighting us?

Marines Fighting Dragons, Army’s Standing in Formations

September 10th, 2009
by Jack

The Army seriously has to fire whoever does their advertisements. Unless, the problem is an officer who job it is to tell the advertisement companies what they want.  If it’s the officer then, he should be demoted immediately.

The US Army has by far the worst commercials in the entire world.  The Marines are off fighting dragons while the Army is portrayed as standing in formations making facing movements.  Who really thought that was a good idea?  For god’s sake the Navy’s commercials are nothing but showing off the Navy Seals!  The Navy Seals have to make up like less than 1% of the total Navy, but they make up about 98% of their advertisements.    This is what is called, “Smart.”  The Air Force of course shows off their fighter jets and their Para-jumpers.  Once again, Pilots make up 4% of the total Air Force and the PJ are probably around 1%.  Why are these other services showing off combat, but not the Army?

The Army shows Soldiers standing around in formations, some videos of combat but they are all of Soldiers doing things very carefully, cautious and not being extreme. Also, note the use of really dull music. The Army’s videos always try to instill some sense of pride (BORING!). The other services have this hard rock music and things exploding.

Marines fighting Dragons, I mean Demons! (Proabably a Baylor from Lord of the Rings) (I know there is a Dragon one but I couldn’t find it)

Marines Fighting Wizards!

Marines Doing Crazy Things and Transforming!

This proves cool videos get people (Warning extreme Language)

Air Force Rocking Out the Jets!

Air Force Jumping out of Planes!

Navy portraying it’s 1%!

Probably the Only Army Commercial I liked. Dude Running in Desert being B.A.

Soldiers Standing Around, Not Doing Cool Things, Just Reciting Boring Stuff! (This one makes me think, “Army standing around becoming cannon fodder in formations!”

Really Old Boring Army Commercial

Soldiers Turning Their Heads and Soldiers Jumping out of Planes in a Boring Manner.

This Isn’t Going to Get Young People In The Army

You know what would fix this… maybe a little free market mix up!  I see things like Poptent being the future of Advertisement.

Even the Brits have better commercials then us…. NOOO!!!

I love the music in this one

Iran – Somebody set up us the bomb.

September 9th, 2009
by Jack

Oh Great, It’s not going to be long before Iran declares, “All your base are belong to us.”

War with Iran now?  Unless the US completely pulls out of Iraq and lets Afghanistan become completely undermanned (again) would we be able to fight another war, without a draft.  We just don’t have the manpower to pull it off.  America is already too tired; I’m betting Iran is betting that too.  They will just continue on assuming we aren’t going to do anything about it.  My guess… they are right.  We won’t see an US led invasion of Iran.   The most the US will lead is to the UN asking for more sanctions.  I will guarantee that Israel will take care of the problem. So once again, don’t worry America.

From the Military Times / AP

The United States warned Wednesday that Iran is close to having the capabilities to produce a nuclear weapon and urged Tehran to join in fresh talks with key allies about its disputed intentions.Glyn Davies, Washington’s chief envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency, said the latest report by the nuclear watchdog shows that Tehran is either very near or already in possession of sufficient low-enriched uranium to produce one nuclear weapon, if the decision were made to further enrich it to weapons-grade.

“This ongoing enrichment activity … moves Iran closer to a dangerous and destabilizing possible breakout capacity,” Davies told the agency’s 35-nation board of governors.

From Times of London

The head of Mossad, Israel’s overseas intelligence service, has assured Benjamin Netanyahu, its prime minister, that Saudi Arabia would turn a blind eye to Israeli jets flying over the kingdom during any future raid on Iran’s nuclear sites.

Earlier this year Meir Dagan, Mossad’s director since 2002, held secret talks with Saudi officials to discuss the possibility.

So what does this mean for America?  Given the fact that Israel is always willing to fight for it’s freedom, this move is almost a guarantee because Israel will not want to give up it’s biggest asset.  If Israel is no longer the only nuclear state in the Middle East, Iran will basically have taken away their hold on the region.  Pakistan and India have possessed nuclear weapons for over a decade and that hasn’t stopped their fighting over Kashmir.  Since Israel has had the bomb they have basically been allowed to do strikes against their opponents with a small amount of chance their target will strike back (Here, Here, Here).  To explain, if Israel attacks another nation, they cannot fight back for fear of being nuked.  By Iran having the bomb this means Israel is then checked.  But not in a good way.  This will lead to full blown conventional warfare.  I believe they can fight each other and not nuke one another.

This is why Israel has to take out their nuclear facilities now.  If they don’t it will end to a full scale war, or Iran using the nuke or giving/selling it to terrorists organizations who will definitely use it against them or anyone else for that matter.

Back to my question, “What does this mean for America?”  Say, we stay out of it completely until they start killing each other.  If they end up fighting each other we will  have to intervene with a combination of humanitarian aid and/or military power and a lot of blankets.

Among Soldiers Petraeus is god

September 5th, 2009
by Jack

If 2012 election came around and Gen. Petraeus was running for president of the United States I could see him standing to win.  The nice thing about electing a general is they tend to come off as invincible.  In public view their comments stick to the job at hand and don’t make offensive off-hand comments that could annoy potential constituents.

If the war didn’t get you, then can Washington hope to kill you?  In my opinion, not this guy.  Everything I read about him makes me think, Petraeus is one tough old man.  I’ve never met him personally, but from what I understand I wouldn’t want to mess with the man.  Rick Atkinson’s book In The Company of Soldiers basically chronicles Petraeus’ command through the Iraq Invasion with the 101st Airborne Division (Rick Atkinson was embed with Petraeus).  To drive the nail in that he’s tough as them; he’s been known to run his lieutenants into the ground (He was in his 50s, LTs are usually 22 to 28).  Maybe this is a case of ‘They just don’t make them like the used to.’

He fixed Northern Iraq as the commander of the 101st.  He then fixed Iraq as the commander of CENTCOM.  Could he fix America as president?

From my personal experience, every general is paving the way for some kind of electoral position.  I’ve noticed the second they take off the big-bird rank and put on a star; they stop yelling and start shaking the hands of the men they meet under their command.

He said in 2007 he wasn’t interested in running.  However, it’s probably prudent for a general to keep his mouth shut until he gets out of the service.  I mean if Obama knew that he would run against him in 2012.  He would undoubtedly make sure until that time he was reassigned to the worst assignments. After that Obama would hope he doesn’t get anymore political coverage.  Plus, it’s bad for a general to undermine a political leader (I’m pretty sure it’s against the UCMJ).  If he said he wanted to run it would basically be saying, “Hey you guys aren’t cutting it.” Which is the truth, but once again, UCMJ.

In 2012 I would like to see Bobby Jindal and Petraeus compete for the Republican Ticket.  Frankly, if Bobby is going to have any kind of chance he has to do better speeches than he did after Obama won the presidency.  To be fair, all of his other speeches sounded great!  Maybe, he should fire whoever wrote that speech about him being a child and his father telling him, ‘Americans can do anything.’  Before, I felt like Bobby was a very intelligent person who treated me, the viewer, as an intelligent being.  After that speech, I felt like he was talking down to me, or speaking directly to children because all of their hippy parents were celebrating ‘The Ones’ nomination.

Leave comments if you got them!?  Who’s your presidential hopeful and how badly do you think they are going to compete against Obama? (That’s if they let him take the democratic ticket)

Free Market Units

September 4th, 2009
by Jack

From the very moment I showed up at my first duty station I was abruptly introduced to the concept of a commodity.  Or, more precisely that I as an individual am a commodity.   The thing about Reserve units is they are usually filled with two things; Old War Goats and College Students.  Mostly Old War Goats.

Old War Goats are people who are above 40 years old, they served a long time on active duty and now switched to the reserves.  The thing about Old War Goats, and I think it’s kind of systemic of anyone who has a blue collar job and is above 40.  They have absolutely no clue how computers work.  I don’t mean like the actual electronic functions of a computer I mean; how to use windows, word, powerpoint, excel.  Frankly, if you were born after 1980 you probably would be considered an expert on the functions of these software’s in their minds.

College Students refer to actual college students, and people who wanted to join the military but thought it might be a good idea to try out the reserves before joining the regular army. Or, basically anyone that is young and has only served in the reserves.

My first duty station was an Area Support Group which is mostly office jobs.  To be fair a lot of the Non-Commissioned Officers usually coming into the reserves were infantrymen or mechanics of some sort.  So they would rather eat a MRE than figure out how to Copy and Paste.  However, the Commissioned officers were exactly the same.  At the heart of the job of a commissioned officer is button pushing and memorandum writing.  So I don’t know what their excuse is…

Now this is where I start getting to my point. What was my point again… oh Right!  Being previously in the IT field and having classes in high school that covered Microsoft Office I quickly became the unit Computer Expert and was told time and time again I was a valuable resource.  The problem with being a “Resource” in the military is commanders have the power to decide whether or not to let you leave the unit and join another unit.  Which is why people are ultimately are terrible at everything can leave whenever they want.  Commanders are more than willing to give someone else a problem child.  If you love your unit this is not a problem, but if you hate your unit and you hate the policies of your command… it can be hell.  Also, for people who joined the military to get specialized training, sometimes it can be hard for career development if your commander won’t let you leave.  The National Guard is the worst in my opinion on this particular issue.

This might seem trivial, but it makes for a good example (I lied it’s the first thing that popped into my head).  Say the commander of the 33rd Baton Cleaners Detachment makes a policy of no one can wear headphones while working out in Army PT uniform.  Also, even while in civilian clothes during your off duty workout you may not wear your Ipod or IShuffle (or IBucket… IGlasses) while doing an off duty run on the road.  Solely basing the policy to prevent Soldiers from getting hit by cars while running on the road.  Before you ask, yes, this is a real policy on pretty much every single base I’ve been on.  Now while it’s admirable to prevent Soldiers running along a road to run in front of a car because they didn’t hear it coming.  It’s also a clear infringement on personal choice.  (To further point out how stupid this particular policy is every military base has a Maximum speed limit of 25MPH. Also I remind you we are talking about trained killers, not children… so to think they are responsible enough to take a life but not run on a road while listening to music is fundamentally flawed)

If a Soldier is unhappy with the policies of their command, right now their is nothing they can do or say.  However, if a free market existed pertaining to Soldiers switching units of their own free will.  It would be a positive by forcing commanders to change unreasonable policies to hold onto exceptional Soldier that might be convinced to work for a different command.  This is what I’m advocating, give Soldiers the same right as normal Americans.  You have a choice whether or not to stay with a company that treats you well or poorly.  If the pay or the benefits are good.  Now, I’m not saying let people out of their military contracts.  I’m saying take away the power of commanders to control if a Soldier can move to a different unit or not.

Would you not agree this is a free market solution?

The fact is that keeping “Good Resources” “Smart/Educated/Self Motivated Soldiers in the military is hard because many people get frustrated with the way they are treated.  Keep a good Soldier in the Army, Re-enlist! (Sorry don’t like your policies I’m outta here! (by outta here I mean the left the military completely (Man, we need a free market system)))

Free Market Education: Part 1 Basics

September 4th, 2009
by Jack

Before I write anything I have to put down a foundation of my belief in the free market system.  I had planned on using an analogy talking about mystical unicorns, but it was too silly.   Even for me.

It’s sad that I have to explain this because it’s my experience that people have absolutely no clue at all how perfect the free market really is.  It’s like a unicorn.  Wait, scratch that.  The free market is democracy in the economy.  If I could put it in a math equation it would look something like this.

Free Market = consumer democracy.

What is more American then having the freedom to choose which company your money will support.  It’s almost like this thing called democracy.  You go and vote for the person you want to represent you or to run the country.  It works the same way with companies.

Now assume the government does their part in enforcing anti-trust laws, a free market is as pure as it can get.  The consumer actually plays a part in deciding whether something lives or dies.  If a company makes a terrible product and treats their employees bad.  In a free market your not going to last forever.  What it does is promote ingenuity and innovation.  A controlled market breeds laziness and repetition.

I’ll start off by giving an example of a government controlled market.  Mind you this is very hypothetical.  Our good old pals the Soviet Union had one of these.  You have one car factory.  Imagine it’s the dawn of a beautiful bright new era for the Soviet Automobile Service (SAS) and your a new car designer.  Sure, when you start off your invigorated by the prospects of designing your love.  The automobile!  Your first design is brilliant, it’s safe, powerful and gets great gas mileage.  So you send up the design to the lawyers, because it’s got to meet government standards (of course).  Then, it disappears for months as government experts use a mile or two of red tape.  Eventually it comes back with the government’s changes.  People who didn’t study automobile engineering at the Soviet People’s University for Higher Learning decided that they didn’t like the design and made some uneducated decisions for you.  Well, through the tedious cycle of hogwash a brand new SAS automobile is available for whatever it is they do in a country without money or something.

So you go back to the drawing board but you come to the realization that, “I live in a the controlled market.  Hmmmm…. I don’t have any competitors.  So.  If I don’t get out a new improved model soon, bullocks!”  You can chill out, watch some Soviet channel TV.  Read a dirty novel about Stalin and the American Farm girl.  All while you were supposed to be improving the standard of automobile service for the Soviet people.

Eventually you make some new designs.  However, without having a competitor you don’t really have any new ideas improve of off.  It’s really just you and your coworker Putin coming up with all the ideas.  Decades go by and pretty much the design of your first car looks like your last.  The people don’t really have a say in it.  Well.  Because your the only Automobile Company in town and their is nothing they can do about it.

Now let’s look at a Free Market system.  Let’s stick with the automobile industry, let’s come up with a fictional name like Georges Motors, GM for short. Yokota a Japanese made car and Rev a new upstart American car company.  GM used to make some really nice cars, but it was so long ago that most of the people that remember the nice cars are dead.  GM is a big company and has a huge amount of money.  They get cocky and arrogant.  The CEO spends more time golfing and flying around in his jet than improving the company.  Year’s ago the workers got tired of how they were badly treated by the management that they formed a union to protect themselves.  It took a couple years but the union finally got what they wanted.  But, the union didn’t dissolve it became to powerful for that.  So with accomplishing it’s goals of a better work environment it decided to ask for more and more money. Driving the cost up of the product.  The product however didn’t improve in years, just the same car with a higher price tag.  Nobody at the company cares.  Eventually the consumer wants something different.

The companies Rev and Yokota are making some very efficient cars.  People start buying them.  Yet GM doesn’t change.  Years go by.  Eventually, it’s too late for GM and it goes bankrupt.  The company died because the employees didn’t care, the CEO didn’t care, and the product didn’t change.

It’s a free market so the death of GM meant that Rev and Yokota through their hard work and new vision have new consumers.  They keep making better cars, and because they want to compete make it at a reasonable price.  They offer many different products for all different kinds of people.

When Yokota comes out with a new engine that saves 30% more gas, to compete Rev designs a transmission that also saves 30% more gas.  Then Rev designs a slick new body that everyone wants.  So Yokota has to come out with something new and amazing.

Why has computer advances been made so quickly?  Competition!

The person who decide is the consumer, through free choice of products they get to choose the product and company that their money will support.

To expand on this.  In part 2 of Free Market Education I will talk about the truth of greed.  Oh those GREEDY CORPORATIONS!!!
